The Birkin Bag – A Legend Is Born

Jane Birkin's black leather bag is distressed with age, and comes personalised with stickers and talismans from her travels.

Whilst traveling from London to Paris in the early 1980s, Birkin found herself seated next to the CEO of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas. Laden down with bits and pieces, Birkin’s Hermès organizer was overflowing and some items fell out. Looking at the debris next to him Dumas suggested she put things in the pockets, to which Birkin retorted “If Hermès put pockets in, I would.”

From that moment, the idea of the Hermès Birkin bag was born. Jane Birkin was invited to the Hermès workshop to look at the new envelop-style double-flap creation. One month after the fateful flight from London to Paris, Hermès CEO Dumas sent Birkin the new design and asked if he could name it after her.
